James Bueno, widely known as “Bueno” is the co-Founder and Director of Flight Academy Volleyball, a premier club program based on California’s Central Coast. With over 24 years of coaching experience, Bueno is recognized for his high-energy leadership, athlete-first mindset, and his proven ability to build competitive, culture-driven programs from the ground up.

Originally from Dinuba, California, Bueno began his coaching journey in high school football before transitioning into volleyball after moving to the Central Coast in 2008. His impact on the local volleyball scene was immediate. Drawing from a wide-ranging coaching background—including track, wrestling, martial arts, baseball, softball, and both beach and indoor volleyball. He brings a uniquely well-rounded and disciplined approach to athlete development.

In 2008, Bueno entered the world of club volleyball and quickly became a respected leader in the region. In 2018, he co-founded Central Coast Beach Volleyball, and in 2019 helped lead a 17U team to qualify for the Girls Junior National Championship in Indianapolis—one of the first Central Coast teams to reach that level after a podium finish at the Far Westerns National Qualifier.

In 2020, Bueno and long-time coaching partner Chip Blaney co-founded Flight Academy Volleyball Club. What began with just seven teams has grown into one of the largest and most competitive programs on the Central Coast, now serving over 25 teams across girls and boys divisions. Flight Academy is known for elite-level training, a strong focus on player development, and a mission to create opportunities for athletes at every level.

Outside the club, Coach Bueno also serves as the Head Coach of the Cal Poly Women’s Club Volleyball Team, where he’s guided the program to national prominence:

2023 – Silver Bracket Champions at the MLK Tournament, Gold Bracket Champions at Far Westerns, and qualified for the NCVF Division I National Championship

2024 – Two major tournament wins, a Gold Bracket Quarterfinal finish at NCVF Division I Nationals

2025 – Two more tournament titles, and a Silver Bracket Championship at NCVF Division I Nationals

Coach Bueno is more than a coach—he’s a mentor, builder, and community leader. Whether he’s organizing free clinics, supporting local school programs, or helping athletes earn opportunities at the next level, his mission is clear: to help young athletes grow in confidence, character, and skill while developing a lifelong love for the game.
