Athletes on a Viper Practice Team will:

  • Train with Flight Academy coaches
  • Participate in organized practices throughout the club season
  • Continue developing technical skills and volleyball IQ
  • Be part of the Flight Academy culture and training environment

All athletes interested in a Viper Practice Team must attend tryouts and complete the evaluation process. Viper Practice Teams follow the same general season timeline as our Travel Teams, beginning in January 2027 and concluding in June 2027.

IMPORTANT: 13U & 14U TRYOUTS ARE IN OCTOBER

One of the most common questions we receive each year is why 13U and 14U athletes do not try out in July.

The answer is simple: SCVA and USA Volleyball have separate tryout windows for middle school and high school athletes.

  • 15U–18U athletes may try out in July.
  • 13U–14U athletes may not try out until October.

Tryout Attendance

To receive a fair evaluation, athletes should attend their scheduled tryout session. We will not be offering makeup tryouts.

Flight Academy may offer pre-tryout training opportunities leading up to tryouts. These sessions are intended to help athletes prepare and gain confidence before evaluations begin, but they do not replace attending tryouts.

Tryout Process

During tryouts, athletes will be evaluated through skill work, positional training, competitive drills, and gameplay situations.

Coaches evaluate athletes based on:

  • Technical skills
  • Athleticism
  • Competitiveness
  • Volleyball IQ
  • Communication
  • Coachability
  • Attitude
  • Team-first mentality
How Teams Are Formed

Our goal is to place every athlete in an environment where they can develop and succeed.

Team placement is based on:

  • Skill level
  • Athletic ability
  • Positional needs
  • Coachability
  • Work ethic
  • Team chemistry
  • Overall roster balance

Returning athletes are encouraged to try out each season, but roster spots are not guaranteed based on previous team placement.

After Tryouts

Following tryouts, our coaching staff will finalize team placements.

Team offers will begin going out immediately after tryouts and will continue throughout the next 24 hours.

Not every athlete who attends tryouts will be offered a position on a Travel Team. Some athletes may be offered a position on a Viper Practice Team based on evaluations and roster needs.

Athletes interested in joining a Viper Practice Team must still attend tryouts in order to be evaluated and placed appropriately.

Team Commitment Night

After accepting your roster offer, all athletes and at least one parent or guardian are required to attend their team's Commitment Night at Flight Academy HQ.

This meeting is an important part of the season and will cover:

  • Team introductions
  • Meet your coaching staff
  • Season expectations
  • Tournament and practice schedules
  • Communication procedures
  • Uniform and equipment information
  • Payment plans and important deadlines
  • Questions and answers

Season Information

Sunday, November 22, 2026

Practice times and locations will be announced following team placement.

The season will conclude at the West Coast Cup Championship Tournament in Long Beach on May 21-23, 2027.

Teams that qualify for USA Volleyball Nationals will have their entry fee paid by Flight Academy Volleyball. Families are responsible for travel and lodging expenses.

Participation in AAU Nationals is optional and would require additional registration and travel costs.

All Travel Teams and Viper Practice Teams follow the same general season timeline.
